Embroidery Art - Day of the Dead Pillow

Where has the year gone?  Can you believe by the end of this week we're already half way through July.  I'm already counting down till we get to October.....I can start decorating for the Holiday's. Woo-Hoo!!!

This project that I'm going to share with you was for one of our great friends Birthday.  Her lovely parents were the lucky ones to receive the Patriotic Pillow.  I want to thank all of the lovely blogger's who featured it.  I tried to grab all of the feature buttons, if I'm missed one I'm sorry - please let me know if you don't see yours.

The theme of this pillow is a little early in the year to celebrate....that is if you do! It is usually celebrated November 1st.  I don't celebrate the day, but I do love the art work of everything.  Some of the art work is simply stunning. If you like that sort of thing. I went on-line to get some inspiration for this project.  If you look up Day of the Dead art, you'll see skulls with flowers, hearts, webs, crosses and swirls, in many different colors.  Well my friend LOOOOOVES this kind of stuff and I knew she would be extremely happy when she saw what I made for her.

Here is some information on Day of the Dead History

(Picture quality is not the best, but I'll try to explain as best as I can.)
1.) I folded a sheet of paper and drew a couple of half skull shapes.
2.) Then I cut them out and decided on the one I liked the best.
3.) I traced (2) skulls on a sheet of blank paper and made copies of that.
4.) Then with the inspiration from the net, I drew out the skulls.  You know it's not very easy to draw teeth.  I had such a hard time, I kept drawing and erasing.
1.) I ended up drawing (8) different skulls, I chose the 4 I liked the best.
2.) I pinned the skulls onto foam board with tissue paper over it to trace.
3.) I then traced the skulls with black permanent marker.
4.)  I cut out the tissue traced skulls and set them aside.
5.)  Now I was ready to start.  I pinned it onto the fabric, then put it onto the hoop.
Embroidering on the tissue paper was easy, I was able to tear away and pick out the pieces.  I didn't really have a plan, I just picked different colors.  As I finished each skull I took it off the hoop to pin the next skull where I wanted it to be.  I really loved the way it all came out.
Drawing out the skulls, embroidery and sewing took me about 27 hours combined....it probably would have been less if I wasn't watching re-runs of Ugly Betty or The Office, lol.
For the back I chose a black with white polka dots.  I have to say my favorite skull has to be the last  one with the blue flower.

I'm happy to say that she was really excited to receive this gift.  I'm glad!!

Thanks for stopping by to view this weeks project.

Everyone have a fabulous week.

Wednesday Family Showcase.... #7

Today I am featuring my niece

Aubrey Rose

This is my brothers youngest daughter.  Aubrey will turn 2 years old in August, her older brother is Aiden  (3) and her older sister is Anne-Marie (2).  She loves her brother and sister very much. Aubrey also likes to play with her cousins.  She enjoys watching cartoons and loves to talk in her own gibber jabber language, lol!  My sister-in-law said she was in the jumpy house for the first time ever and she enjoyed it very much.

She's a sweetie, well around me she is.  Aubrey is my little rosebud!  That's my nickname for her.

Wednesday Family Showcase.... #6

This weeks family showcase is introducing my niece

Anne-Marie

This is my brothers middle child and she's a total daddy's girl.  She turned 2 in February and has an older brother Aiden (3) and a younger sister Aubrey (1). She's been made tough by having to play with her older brother and her boy cousins before her little sister and her cousin were born.  Anne loves to play with her dolls and most times you'll catch her putting them night, night as she says.  Anne is a sweetheart and a firecracker!  She also likes to watch cartoons with her brother and sister

Anne also stole my birthday thunder, I was the only February birthday in our family until she came along, Thanks Anne!! lol!!  I love her and we all call her Butterball!

Thanks for visiting!

Wednesday Family Showcase.... #5

This week I'm introducing

Aiden

He is my brothers son. He recently turned (3) in December.  Aiden has two sisters Anne-Marie who just turned (2) on February 12th, and Aubrey Rose who is (1½).  He loves his sisters very much.

These are pictures from his 3rd Birthday that I was able to take.

He was eating all the candy he could... because he knew his dad would normally not allow him to eat this much.

Aiden loves Spiderman as you can see from his birthday pics.  He loves to take pictures, then will ask you to let him see it!  Aiden can sing you his ABC's and he can probably work my phone better than I can.  He enjoys playing with his cousins.  He likes to say words like Awwwesoooommmeee and Niiiiiccceee....and always adds that extra emphasis to the words. lol! He's a pretty great kid, but don't try to wake him up from his naps, talk about Mr. Grumpy Pants.

Thanks for stopping by and getting to know my family.

Wednesday Family Showcase.... #4

Today I'm going to introduce my nephew

Jacob

He is my other sisters only child.  He made me an Auntie for the very first time. Jacob is going to be (8) in June and he's in the 2nd grade. This kid is smart.....he's in the gifted & talented program at his school.  He loves to read, play baseball and build things.  He has about a billion monster trucks, that are always nice and neat. Jacob enjoys playing video games with his dad or anyone who challenges him.

Halloween 2011

Jacob is straight forward and will tell it like it is. That's what I love about him, brutal honesty! Even if it does hurt my feelings, lol.  I try to do crafts with the nieces and nephews every holiday.  This last craft session we had he told me,  "Tia (Spanish for auntie)  if you're not dead yet and I'm married and have kids will you do crafts with me and the kids?" I told him I sure would!

He is my Peanut and I love him!

Wednesday Family Showcase.... #3

Let me introduce to you my nephew,
Malaki
My youngest sisters son. He is the oldest in her family. His younger brother is Maddox (4) and his baby sister is Milan (1).  He will turn (7) in May.  Malaki has the biggest heart that you could imagine. He loves his little brother and adores his baby sister.  Malaki is in the 1st grade and he's a smarty!  This last quarter he received straight A's on his report card.

Malaki likes to hang out and play with his cousins. He enjoys watching movies and playing his Batman video game. Or whatever he's into at the time.

This child owns a piece of my ♥!!

I'm doing this showcase by families so everyone that reads this blog won't get confused. Next week I will be showcasing my other sisters son.

Thanks for stopping by and getting to know my family.

Wednesday Family Showcase.... #2

Let me introduce to you one of my nephews.
Maddox
My youngest sisters son. He is the middle child in her family. His older brother is Malaki (7) and his baby sister is Milan (1).  He turned 4 in January. He is a sweet child when he wants to be, he tells his mommy she looks pretty and give hugs and kisses to his aunties and grandmas. Other times....he's known as "the Texas Tornado" or I refer to him as "MadMax", lol. He is fearless...which can be good and bad.

Look at that smile....
He didn't always have his hair grown out this way....
after his sister was born he now refuses to have it cut!! Jealous? Maybe!

Having fun in the bounce house...this child has 24/7 energy!!

Oh, poor baby...who can refuse this pouty face??
I can, I tell him he can't pull that with me.
When I say no, it mean no! But most of the time I'm a fun auntie.

Thanks for stopping by and getting to know my family!

Wednesday Family Showcase....

Let me introduce to you one of my nieces.

Milan

She is my youngest sisters daughter. She is the youngest niece on my side of the family, and she's a feisty, tiny lil thing too!! She turned 1 in November, and was already walking at 9 months, Milan has two older brothers Malaki (7) and Maddox (4). And they are already at her beck and call! She beats them up and pulls their hair, but they love her and are very protective of her. Since my sister is a sewer too, she is the little model we use.  As you can see she is a little fashionista!!

How cute is she?
Milan Alycia-Ann
Um, can I have the exact same outfit in my size, thanks!

Every week I'll be showcasing one of my nieces or nephews.  We love these kids as if they were our own.
Wow, this is gonna be a lot of posts......together the hubs and I have 18 nieces & nephews and 5 great nieces & nephews!!

I think we need to catch up and have a baby too, we're working on it!

The weather has been fantastic, no rain though - but the wind has been crazy and not helping with all of the fires that are going on here in Texas.  Also everyone that was hit by Lee.... Keeping them all in my thought and prayers.
